Express train hits workers at Shin‑Kanuma Station in Japan, killing four

Four railway employees lost their lives Thursday when an express train entered Shin‑Kanuma Station on the Tobu Nikko Line in Tochigi prefecture, north of Tokyo. The Tokyo‑bound Spacia service struck the crew while they were performing weed‑control work on the tracks.

The victims included three laborers and a supervisor. All were taken to a nearby hospital but were later pronounced dead, according to the Tochigi prefectural police and Tobu Railway Co., the line’s operator. Six additional personnel on the site – two other workers, three lookouts and an on‑site supervisor – were not injured, and roughly 50 passengers aboard the train escaped harm.

Workers had been assigned to spray herbicide along the track. Standard safety protocol requires lookouts to warn colleagues of an approaching train by waving a flag, sounding a whistle, or using a microphone. Police said it remains unclear why the crew remained on the track as the train approached, and what actions the lookouts took at the critical moment. Tobu Railway officials said they are cooperating fully with the investigation.

Fatal train accidents are rare in Japan, a nation known for its punctual and safe rail system. Takao Suzuki, head of Tobu’s railway business division, issued a public apology, stating, “We take this severe accident seriously and will ensure preventive measures so that it never happens again.”

Following the collision, train service on the Tobu Nikko Line was suspended for several hours while emergency responders cleared the site and investigators gathered evidence. Service resumed later that day, allowing commuters to continue their journeys.

Investigation and safety review

Authorities from the Tochigi prefectural police and Tobu Railway have opened a joint investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy. The inquiry will examine whether proper safety procedures were followed, whether communication between lookouts and workers was effective, and whether any equipment failures contributed to the incident.

Japan’s railway industry typically conducts rigorous safety drills and employs multiple layers of protection, including automated signaling and physical barriers. The outcome of this investigation may prompt a review of existing protocols for maintenance crews working on active lines, especially in stations where express trains pass at high speed.

Community response

Local residents expressed sorrow for the families of the deceased workers. Community leaders called for a thorough examination of safety practices to prevent future tragedies. The incident has also sparked a broader conversation about occupational safety standards for railway maintenance personnel across the country.

While the accident was an isolated event, it underscores the importance of strict adherence to safety measures in high‑speed rail environments. The findings of the ongoing investigation will likely inform future policy decisions and operational guidelines for Japan’s extensive rail network.
