A dietitian is warning TikTok users to ignore viral health trends that do more harm than good — and could lead to serious mental and physical health issues. Hazel Shore, a registered dietitian, says she wants to cut through the noise of diet culture and misinformation that’s influencing young people.
6 Trends to Avoid
After reviewing the latest ‘health’ trends on TikTok and Instagram, Hazel warns against six trends: boy kibble, almond mom, fiber maxxing, protein maxxing, parasitic cleanse, and supplement stacking.
Boy kibble refers to a repeated meal of ground beef and rice, mixed together to resemble pet food. While the individual foods can be nutritious, the trend’s blandness and lack of variety can lead to missing out on important vitamins and minerals.
The almond mom trend, which suggests giving children a single almond if they’re hungry, promotes potentially unhealthy eating habits in children and can have serious consequences on their mental and physical health.
Fiber maxxing, which involves significantly increasing fiber intake, can cause uncomfortable digestive side effects if done too quickly or excessively. Protein maxxing, which aims to optimize diet with as much protein as possible, can be costly and excessive, and may displace other important nutrients.
Parasitic cleanse trends spread misinformation about food and can put people off eating nutritious foods like fish and meat. Supplement stacking can be expensive and may interact with medications or cause harm if taken in excess.
