Evanston family reunited with dog missing for 12 years after volunteer search

When Vanessa Antonino left for work twelve years ago, she never imagined she would be searching for her beloved dog, Flor, for the rest of her adult life. The Evanston, Illinois resident lost the four‑year‑old canine on the north side of Chicago and, despite daily prayers and countless pictures shown to her four children, Flor remained missing.

Volunteer effort brings breakthrough

Earlier this week, a volunteer from the Evanston Animal Shelter learned that a woman assisting with storm‑damage relief in Gary, Indiana, had discovered a frightened dog near a road. The woman, a volunteer from Louisiana, called local officials, and the animal was turned over to Griffith Animal Control.

Microchip Hunters, a nonprofit that specializes in locating “dead‑end” microchips, stepped in. Co‑Director Jeanette Garlow explained that Flor’s chip was still active, but the phone number on file was outdated. The organization’s volunteers traced the chip to Antonino’s old contact information, confirming the dog’s identity.

Emotional homecoming

A shelter volunteer drove Flor back to Evanston, where Antonino met her after more than a decade apart. “I just bawled,” Antonino said, tears streaming down her face. “I broke down completely. A piece of my heart was back with me.”

Antonino’s story is a reminder of the lasting bond between families and their pets. She recalled a difficult period when she lived out of her car, with Flor by her side. “There was a time in my life when I wasn’t put together. I was from place to place, living in my car, staying in my car, and Flor was there with me through everything,” she said.

Why microchipping matters

Garlow used the reunion to stress the importance of microchipping pets and keeping owner contact information current. “Accidents happen, and once a pet is missing, it is too late to have them microchipped,” she warned, noting that a functional chip can still lead to a reunion even after many years.

Local animal shelters and volunteer groups continue to rely on community support and modern technology to reunite families with lost animals. Residents are encouraged to check that their pets’ microchips are up to date and to report any found animals to nearby shelters.

Community response

The story has resonated with many Evanston families, who see it as a testament to perseverance, faith, and the power of volunteerism. As Antonino’s children grew up, they often spoke of Flor as a big sister, keeping her memory alive until the miraculous return.

Flor’s safe return underscores the value of local nonprofit networks and the compassion that defines the Evanston community.
