Evangel Christian Academy eyes football resurgence as LSU commit Peyton Houston leads team

Shreveport, La. – Evangel Christian Academy’s football program is rebuilding after a disappointing quarterfinal loss to eventual state champion Edna Karr. Head coach Denny Duron emphasized that the team’s new goal is to win each game and each day, rather than fixating on a state title.

Coach Duron stresses hard work and character

“You reap what you sow. You don’t sow potatoes and reap squash,” Duron told reporters. “These guys have sown hard work, resiliency, toughness, and long hours in the offseason. Probably the greatest off‑season in our history.” The coach believes that the lessons learned this year will lay a foundation for future success.

Quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston balances fame and humility

Senior quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston, a four‑star recruit committed to LSU, is one of only 11 high‑school athletes nationwide with a major NIL agreement with Nike. Despite the spotlight, teammates say he remains grounded.

“You wouldn’t even know he’s a four‑star committed to LSU. He’s just another guy who wants to get better every single day,” said linebacker Bennett Speer.

Houston echoed that sentiment, noting, “I’m taking advantage of every opportunity I’ve got in front of me. We live one day at a time, so I capitalize on each day and work to finish this high school year strong.” He added that his maturity helps younger players develop: “Just knowing I got more maturity, understanding the game a little bit more to help the guys that are a little less experienced. I’m getting those guys up to speed and helping them get to where they need to be. The team will grow for sure.”

Running back Kionte Mims II on staying focused

Running back Kionte Mims II praised Houston’s leadership while reminding teammates to stay humble. “He’s a phenomenal athlete, but at the same time, keep working like you have zero stars,” Mims said.

Looking ahead

Duron believes Houston’s presence inspires the entire squad. “He inspires all of us every single day,” the coach said.

With a renewed emphasis on daily progress, Evangel hopes to climb back to the top of Louisiana high‑school football. The Eagles’ next schedule includes several key matchups that will test the team’s resolve and showcase the talent of players like Houston, who plans to spend his remaining high‑school days at Evangel before heading to LSU.
