Schools in Estonia’s Tartu are taking precautions to protect children from military drones. The town, which is 45 km from the Russian border, has experienced stray Ukrainian drones entering its airspace. To mitigate potential harm, schools are applying protective film to windows and designating safe areas for children to hide in case of a drone alert.
Preparations and Drills
The head of Tartu’s Kivilinna secondary school, Karin Lukk, stated that the school is planning drills to teach children how to react to a drone alert. The school will also provide games and books in the basement to keep children entertained while hiding. The town’s 30 schools and 38 kindergartens are being secured, and generators are being distributed to residential buildings to keep people warm in winter during any power cuts.
Airin Treiman Kiveste, the mother of an 11-year-old girl at the school, expressed relief that the school is taking proactive measures. Other Estonian towns are considering following Tartu’s example, as the Baltic state assesses measures to protect its citizens from the ongoing conflict.
