Election officials say mail voting remains secure despite President Trump’s criticism

Election officials from coast to coast are reassuring voters that mail voting will remain a reliable option for the November 2026 midterms, even as President Trump publicly decries the practice. In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, President Trump called the nation’s mail‑in voting system a “totally CORRUPT and out of control… disaster.” The administration’s proposed rule would have required states to use voter‑specific data and Postal Service‑approved envelopes with barcode tracking, a measure the Supreme Court rejected on Monday.

Officials confident the process will hold up

Hannah Fried, executive director of the voting‑rights group All Voting Is Local, said she feels less fear now than a year ago, noting that the Supreme Court’s decision removes a major source of uncertainty. “I was more scared a year ago than I am now,” Fried said, adding that she still expects President Trump to claim fraud, a claim repeatedly found to lack evidence.

David Becker, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation and Research, echoed that sentiment. “Trump’s false claims have created unnecessary challenges for local election officials,” Becker said, “but the primaries this year have gone smoothly despite months of attacks on voting by mail. I’m actually rather confident it won’t cause chaos.”

Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters, observed that the organization’s volunteers are reaching out to voters in all 50 states, and that President Trump’s rhetoric appears to be motivating more people to make concrete plans to cast a ballot, whether by mail or in person.

Data shows mail voting remains popular and bipartisan

According to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, roughly 47 million Americans—about 32 % of the electorate—voted by mail in the 2024 presidential election. The MIT Election Data and Science Lab reports that mail voting skews Democratic, with 37 % of Democrats and 24 % of Republicans using the method in 2024. Those figures illustrate that mail voting is a mainstream, bipartisan tool for participation.

Local administrators stress continuity

Lisa Brown, clerk of Michigan’s Oakland County, said voters’ primary concern is whether mail voting will remain an option, not its legitimacy. “He made claims of fraud in 2020. There was never any proof of that. That election was accurate, secure, and fair,” Brown said. “He can make whatever claims he wants. It doesn’t change how secure and accurate our process is.”

Matt Dole, a Republican strategist in Ohio, added that despite President Trump’s rhetoric, he does not anticipate widespread fraud claims in the midterms.

What the administration says

President Trump maintains that the current mail‑in system is vulnerable, arguing that stricter standards are needed to protect election integrity. His administration contends that barcode‑tracked envelopes and voter‑specific data would prevent potential abuse, even though courts have repeatedly found no evidence of systemic fraud.

Nevertheless, election officials across the nation remain steadfast that the existing system, bolstered by years of experience and robust verification procedures, will safely deliver ballots to voters and be counted accurately.

As the midterm season approaches, voters can expect continued outreach from both government agencies and civic groups to ensure that every eligible American can cast a ballot without undue obstacles.
