El Paso’s Creosote Bush releases a compound called petrichor when wet, giving the rain a distinct smell. Sami Miri, owner of Ziba Fragrances in West El Paso, has bottled this scent into a perfume.
A Family Tradition
Sami’s family has a history of working with scents. His mother is Persian and his father is from the UAE, and he was born in the UAE. Sami says making unique scents from parts of life is part of his culture.
Sami doesn’t stop at rain. He’s also bottled the smell of hospitals, libraries, and even car oil. For Sami, a single whiff can transport him back to a moment in time, a place, or a feeling.
