Egypt’s tourism sector is adding a unique rail experience ahead of the total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027. Abela Trains Services Egypt, Middle East Travel Alliance (META) and its Egyptian DMC partner Amisol Travel Egypt have announced the Abela × Amisol Eclipse Express 2027, a collection of five specially designed overnight train journeys that will bring visitors through the Nile Valley to Luxor for the astronomical event.
Travel by rail, not by air
The concept is simple: don’t fly over Egypt—travel through it. Guests will board sleeper trains in Cairo, enjoy private cabins, onboard hospitality and meal service, and wake up in Upper Egypt as the train winds its way toward the eclipse‑viewing site. Selected itineraries also offer upgrades to a Club Car for enhanced dining.
Five routes, one destination
The Eclipse Express series links major destinations such as Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, with deeper excursions into Middle Egypt, Sohag and Abydos. Each journey is designed to showcase Egypt’s agricultural landscapes, Nile communities, railway towns and archaeological treasures that many tourists miss when they fly directly to the eclipse site.
Eclipse Festival in Luxor
On eclipse day, travelers will gather for a specially organized Eclipse Festival in Luxor, featuring a dedicated viewing location, transportation, seating, shade, refreshments, a BBQ lunch, guest facilities, local assistance and professional eclipse support. When totality occurs, the historic backdrop of ancient Egypt will frame the brief darkness.
Partners behind the project
Abela Trains Services Egypt, owned by Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, has managed sleeper‑train operations between Cairo and Upper Egypt since 2023, following the handover from the National Sleeping Trains Company. META provides the international travel framework, while Amisol Travel Egypt contributes decades of tourism expertise and Scandinavian roots, having served around one million travelers since its founding in 1999.
Beyond the eclipse
While the eclipse is the centerpiece, the itineraries also allow guests to combine totality with visits to the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Aswan, Abydos and other iconic sites. The aim is to let travelers experience Egypt’s rich heritage and contemporary life, rather than simply using the country as a transit point.
