Raptors, Bison, and a Bear Named Finn: An Afternoon at Cody’s Bison Basin Wild Encounter

Let me set the scene for you. It is mid-afternoon in Cody, the kind of afternoon where the light turns the Absaroka range into something that looks painted, and you are standing no more than twenty feet from a grizzly bear named Finn. He is enormous, amber-eyed, and completely unbothered by your presence. You, on the other hand, are gripping the fence rail with both hands and grinning like a child on Christmas morning. That is exactly what a visit to the Grizzly Experience at the Cody Wildlife Encounter feels like — and it is one of those afternoons you will talk about for years.

Tucked just east of downtown Cody on the way in from the airport, the wildlife sanctuary occupies a stretch of high-plains habitat that feels genuinely wild, not manufactured. This is not a theme park. It is a licensed wildlife refuge where animals that can no longer survive on their own in the wild — injured raptors, orphaned black bears, wolves, and yes, full-grown grizzlies — are given permanent, thoughtfully managed homes. Every animal here has a story, and the knowledgeable staff are more than happy to tell you each one in detail.

The grizzlies are the undeniable stars. On the afternoon I visited, Finn was working his way methodically through a pile of seasonal browse, pausing occasionally to lift his massive head and survey his territory with the quiet authority of a creature that has absolutely nothing to prove. Nearby, a younger female named Willow tested the fence line with her nose, curious and deliberate. Watching them move — that rolling, muscle-forward gait — you understand immediately why people who encounter grizzlies in the wild describe the experience as something that rewires the brain.

But do not rush past the raptor enclosures on your way to the bears. The sanctuary houses bald eagles, golden eagles, great horned owls, and a red-tailed hawk that seems to have strong opinions about visitors who linger too long without acknowledging her. The care team often does informal talks near the enclosures in the late afternoon, and if you catch one, clear your schedule — these folks are passionate, funny, and genuinely moving when they explain what it takes to give these animals a dignified life.

Plan to spend at least two hours here. The pace is unhurried, the signage is excellent, and the setting — sagebrush underfoot, mountains framing every view — makes the whole experience feel cinematic. Bring a good camera with a zoom lens. The morning light is beautiful if you can arrive early, but the golden-hour glow in the late afternoon is something else entirely.

Admission is reasonable, the staff are welcoming to families and solo travelers alike, and the gift shop carries some genuinely thoughtful items, with proceeds going directly to the animals’ care. If you are traveling the Cody corridor on your way to or from Yellowstone and you think you do not have time for a detour, make time. An afternoon with Finn the grizzly will rearrange your priorities in the best possible way.
