Edmond Firefighters Battle Wildfire Near Centennial Elementary

On Saturday afternoon, Edmond fire officials responded to a rapidly spreading wildfire that broke out behind Centennial Elementary School, near the intersection of North Coltrane and East Coffee Creek roads. The blaze threatened residential neighborhoods adjacent to the school, prompting an immediate multi‑agency response.

Local fire departments mobilize

Edmond Fire Department units arrived on scene within minutes, establishing fire lines and deploying water‑dropping equipment to protect homes and the school property. Oak Cliff firefighters from nearby Oklahoma City joined the effort, providing additional manpower and resources to help knock out the flames.

Chief John Davis of the Edmond Fire Department emphasized the importance of swift action, noting that the proximity of the fire to a school and family homes required a coordinated, aggressive response. “Our top priority is the safety of our children, families, and property,” Davis said. “We are working closely with our neighboring partners to ensure the fire is contained as quickly as possible.”

Community impact and safety measures

Residents in the surrounding area were urged to stay indoors, close windows, and avoid the immediate vicinity of the fire. The fire department set up a temporary command post on the north side of the school to monitor air quality and coordinate evacuation routes if needed.

Parents with children attending Centennial Elementary were notified through the school’s emergency alert system. The school remained open for the remainder of the day, but classes were temporarily relocated to a nearby community center while air quality was assessed.

Cause under investigation

Authorities have not yet released a definitive cause for the wildfire. Preliminary reports suggest that dry conditions and strong winds may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s office is conducting a full investigation to determine the origin and any potential negligence.

Looking ahead

The fire remains active, but crews report that containment efforts are making progress. Officials expect the blaze to be fully extinguished by early Sunday morning, weather permitting. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local news outlets and the Edmond city website for updates.

Edmond’s fire department continues to thank the community for its cooperation and patience during this emergency. The department also reminded citizens of the importance of fire safety practices, especially during the dry season, and urged anyone with concerns about fire hazards on their property to contact the fire department for a safety inspection.
