Economist Stephen Moore Says Socialist Leaders Profit From Free Market Capitalis

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, economist Stephen Moore – who served as a senior economic adviser in the Trump administration – warned that America’s most vocal socialist figures are profiting from the free‑market system they seek to dismantle. Moore, a longtime advocate of limited government and free‑enterprise principles, said the United States uniquely rewards those who criticize capitalism while still reaping its benefits.

Wealth built on capitalism

Moore cited several high‑profile Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders, online commentator Hasan Piker, and Senator Elizabeth Warren, as examples of individuals who have amassed significant fortunes despite publicly championing socialist policies. “There’s no country in the world where you can get rich off of attacking free‑market capitalism better than in the United States,” he said. “Dozens of prominent voices on the Democratic side are millionaires or richer, and they attack the very system that made them rich in the first place.”

Hypocrisy or principle?

Referring to a recent USA Today opinion piece that highlighted Piker’s lifestyle, Moore argued that many self‑described socialists come from affluent backgrounds or have built wealth through the market they deem immoral. “It is remarkable how many of these leading, so‑called advocates of socialism have come from rich families or have gotten rich on capitalism themselves,” he noted. Moore suggested that if these leaders truly believed in wealth‑redistribution, they should begin by sharing their own assets.

“I think the capital H is for hypocrisy here,” Moore said. “If they really believed in the policies they espouse, maybe they could start with themselves – sell some assets and give the money to the poor.” He added that, historically, free‑market capitalists tend to be more generous in charitable giving than democratic socialists, citing a well‑known study on philanthropy.

Concealing wealth

Moore also claimed that some socialist influencers deliberately hide their wealth to appear more relatable to working‑class voters. “They try to hide their wealth from Americans so they can pretend like they are working‑class people,” he said. “But if you look at the people who are really at the head of the democratic socialist movement, those tend to be very rich people themselves.”

He concluded by reminding listeners that the United States attracts immigrants from socialist nations precisely because of its free‑market opportunities. “People come here from socialist countries and they see why anyone would want more socialism in America when they’ve seen it fail in their own country,” Moore argued.
