East Texas Parks Receive Grants for Trail Improvements

In a boost for local outdoor enthusiasts, two parks in East Texas have received significant funding to improve their trail systems. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Recreational Trails Grants Program has allocated funds to enhance the trails at The Park of East Texas in Tyler and Gun Barrel City Park.

Enhancements at The Park of East Texas

The Park of East Texas, known for hosting the East Texas State Fair each fall, has been granted $300,000. This funding will facilitate the construction of a 1-mile, 6-foot-wide looped decomposed granite trail. The project will also include a gravel parking lot, a trailhead, signage, site furniture, and an entry gate. These improvements aim to provide a better experience for visitors and encourage more community engagement with the park’s natural offerings.

Gun Barrel City Park Trail Renovation

Gun Barrel City Park will see the renovation of its existing trail thanks to a $54,700 grant. The project will refresh the 0.95-mile, 5-foot-wide recycled asphalt trail, ensuring it remains a safe and enjoyable space for residents and visitors alike to enjoy walking and biking.

Statewide Support for Trails

These grants are part of a larger initiative by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, which approved over $6.17 million in grants this May. The funds are designated for 21 trail construction and maintenance projects across Texas, supported by the National Recreational Trails Fund. This initiative underscores the importance of both motorized and non-motorized trail projects in promoting outdoor recreation and community well-being.
