Earthquakes shake Granada province, injuring three and prompting Alhambra closures

On Tuesday, the Granada province of Andalusia experienced a series of seismic events that prompted local authorities to restrict access to the world‑famous Alhambra complex. The tremors, each registering above magnitude 4, resulted in minor injuries to three individuals, one of whom was a child taken to a hospital for treatment.

Details of the quakes

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that the strongest of the three quakes measured 4.7 on the Richter scale and struck at 10:37 a.m. (0837 GMT). Its surface‑level epicentre was located in the town of Gojar, roughly 10 kilometres (six miles) south of the historic city of Granada. Surface‑level earthquakes are felt more intensely and are more likely to cause localized damage than deeper tremors of similar strength.

Two additional, slightly weaker tremors followed in nearby towns on the southern outskirts of Granada. All three events were felt across the region, prompting the provincial authority to issue a statement outlining safety measures.

Impact on public facilities and tourism

In response to the seismic activity, officials at the Alhambra halted tourist access to portions of the sprawling hilltop complex, which is celebrated for its Islamic architectural heritage. The closure follows a magnitude‑5 earthquake on Saturday that forced the temporary shutdown of the Alhambra and caused damage to houses and vehicles throughout the city.

The provincial government also ordered the closure of several administrative buildings, museums and sporting facilities, while keeping primary health centres operational. Granada’s metro system announced on the social‑media platform X that train speeds would be reduced to 30 kilometres per hour (19 miles per hour) as a precaution.

Local media captured scenes of several hotels evacuating guests, and residents reported large cracks in walls, dislodged façade sections and bricks scattered across sidewalks in affected residential structures.

Official statements

Andalusia’s regional official, Antonio Sanz, briefed reporters on the situation, confirming the three light injuries and emphasizing that emergency services were monitoring the situation closely. He noted that the minor who was hospitalized was expected to recover.

Authorities continue to assess structural integrity across the region, and further updates will be provided as inspections progress.

Background on the Alhambra

The Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracted approximately 2.7 million visitors last year, making it one of Spain’s premier tourist destinations. The recent seismic activity underscores the vulnerability of historic sites to natural events and the importance of swift protective measures to safeguard both cultural heritage and public safety.
