Earl Spencer’s New Book Revives Tensions Over Princess Diana’s Legacy

London – Earl Charles Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, is set to release a memoir that reignites controversy surrounding the royal family. In the book, Spencer alleges that King Charles, his former brother‑in‑law, called him in a “stream of anger” after Diana’s death and said, “we’ll forget her soon enough.” Buckingham Palace has categorically rejected the claim, calling it unfounded.

Family ties and past grievances

Spencer, born May 20, 1964, grew up alongside Diana at the family’s Althorp estate in West Northamptonshire. He delivered a moving eulogy at her 1997 funeral, praising her compassion and style. The eulogy earned applause both inside Westminster Abbey and among crowds outside.

Despite a close childhood, the siblings’ relationship was not without conflict. Letters revealed during a 2002 trial of Diana’s former butler documented disputes, including a request by Diana for a home on the estate that Spencer initially declined.

New allegations and royal response

Spencer’s forthcoming book claims that, days after Diana’s death, Charles told him she would soon be forgotten. The Daily Mail published excerpts, prompting a rare palace rebuttal: “The pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss.” The palace emphasized that no such comments had been previously reported.

In a 1999 interview with CNN, Spencer described Charles as “perfectly polite” on the day of Diana’s funeral, noting they traveled together to Althorp for the burial. He added that no negative remarks had been made at that time.

Implications for the wider royal family

Commentators suggest the revelations could affect Princes William and Harry as they navigate their own strained relationship. Earlier this year, Harry and Meghan visited Diana’s gravesite and attended the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, receiving support from Spencer family members.

The latest dispute underscores ongoing fractures within the British monarchy, raising questions about loyalty, memory, and the balance between family bonds and royal tradition.
