E H Teasley crafts giant new shirt for Big Tex ahead of State Fair

Dallas‑area residents will see a new splash of color at the State Fair of Texas this spring. E H Teasley and Company, a family‑owned textile business that has served the fair for more than three decades, is hand‑making a bright‑red, pearl‑snapped shirt for the 55‑foot mascot Big Tex. The project, described by owner Jeff Teasley as an “iconic” opportunity, showcases the skill of a 20‑person crew and the tradition of local craftsmanship that families have trusted for generations.

From design to fabric

Teasley explained that this year’s shirt differs from previous versions because the fabric was printed rather than appliqued. “By printing the material we can offer an unlimited selection of artwork,” he said. “Big Tex can choose a design that’s as fine or as bold as he wants.” The printed material allows the fair to update the shirt’s panels annually, a shift from the three‑year redesign cycle used in the past.

The new shirt celebrates America’s 250th birthday, featuring fresh artwork that reflects the nation’s heritage. Big Tex’s measurements are staggering: a chest of 35 feet 9 inches, biceps 10 feet 9 inches, shoulders 13 feet, a collar 16 feet 8 inches, and sleeves that stretch 27 feet. To ensure a proper fit, E H Teasley first created a mock‑up before cutting the final fabric.

Family history and fair tradition

State Fair officials emphasized the cultural importance of the mascot. “We understand his place and the fair’s place in people’s family history and their traditions,” said Jennifer Schuder of the State Fair of Texas. “We want to uphold those and make sure he looks his best in every single one of those photos.” The shirt will be on display for the millions of visitors who attend the fair, reinforcing a shared community memory that spans generations.

Local business impact

The commission of this massive garment highlights the role of local enterprises in supporting Texas’s biggest annual event. E H Teasley and Company, operating out of the Dallas‑Fort Worth metro area, has supplied custom textiles for the fair for more than 35 years. The project not only showcases the company’s technical expertise but also provides steady work for its skilled workforce.

As the fair approaches, the finished shirt will be hoisted onto Big Tex, who towers over the fairgrounds and serves as a beloved symbol of Texas pride. The collaboration between the State Fair and a home‑grown business underscores the community’s commitment to preserving tradition while embracing modern production methods.

What’s next?

Fair organizers plan to continue updating the shirt’s panels each year, ensuring that the iconic mascot remains fresh and relevant. For the local workforce, the project signals ongoing demand for specialized textile work, reinforcing the importance of supporting family‑run businesses that keep Texas craftsmanship alive.
