Washington, D.C. – Protest Pizza and Bar, a brand‑new eatery in the heart of Dupont Circle, was the target of a burglary just before 3 a.m. on Friday. Surveillance footage shows a man dressed in all black, his face concealed, forcing the glass door, leaping over the bar, and fleeing with cash from the register.
Owners Randy Downs and Ricky Bennett, who live across the street and spent more than a year planning the venture, described the incident as a “disturbing violation of our hard work and home.” Downs said, “We live across the street, so this is our home. It’s a sense of home and security, and that’s what we’re building at Protest Pizza. To have it violated by an individual definitely was not a great day, good start to the day.”
Within minutes of posting about the break‑in on social media, the owners were overwhelmed by messages of encouragement, flowers, and offers of assistance. Residents of the neighborhood, senior community members, and even businesses from as far away as Oklahoma responded, placing orders both in person and online.
“I’ve been choked up all day, choked up, I’ve been crying just thinking about everyone who wants us to succeed and grow our business here,” Downs said. Bennett added, “The house is packed, the tickets are non‑stop. Just thank you to everyone again, thank you to everyone who’s reached out, shown love near and far.”
The surge of support turned what could have been a discouraging opening into a bustling first day. Customers lined up at the storefront, and the kitchen kept pace with a steady stream of orders, demonstrating the community’s willingness to rally around a local entrepreneur facing hardship.
Downs and Bennett emphasized that the simplest way to help a small business in trouble is to show up and purchase what they offer. Their experience underscores the importance of neighborly solidarity in a city where many new businesses rely on word‑of‑mouth and local patronage to survive.
Police response
As of the time of writing, the Metropolitan Police Department has not released any information about suspects, leads, or arrests related to the burglary. The investigation remains open, and the owners hope that continued community vigilance will aid law‑enforcement efforts.
Looking ahead
Protest Pizza and Bar plans to continue serving the Dupont Circle neighborhood with its menu of pizza, craft beer, and a welcoming atmosphere. The owners hope the early adversity will become a footnote in a longer story of growth and community partnership.
