Driver Falls Asleep, Crashes Into Closed Dental Office on Page Road in Durham

Durham police responded to a traffic incident on the 2200 block of Page Road at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Monday. According to officers, the driver of a passenger vehicle reported that he had fallen asleep while driving, causing his car to leave the roadway and collide with the front of a dental office.

Details of the crash

The dental practice was closed at the time of the impact, so no patients or staff were inside the building. First responders found the driver conscious but with minor injuries. He was evaluated on scene and, as a precaution, was transported to a local hospital for further observation. Hospital staff later confirmed that his injuries were non‑life‑threatening and that he was expected to be released.

Police statement

Durham Police Department spokesperson Officer Maria Hernandez said, “The driver admitted that he became drowsy and fell asleep behind the wheel, which caused his vehicle to drift off the road and strike the dental office. He was cooperative and received prompt medical attention.” The officer added that the investigation remains open, but no criminal charges are anticipated at this time.

Community safety reminder

Local officials used the incident as an opportunity to remind residents of the dangers of drowsy driving. “Fatigue is a serious impairment, comparable to alcohol,” Hernandez noted. “We encourage anyone who feels tired to pull over in a safe location, take a short rest, or arrange alternative transportation.” The Durham Police Department also highlighted resources such as the state’s Highway Safety Program, which offers tips on recognizing driver fatigue and staying alert on the road.

Impact on the dental office

The dental office, which serves patients from several surrounding neighborhoods, reported no damage to its interior, as the collision affected only the exterior façade. The practice’s owner, Dr. Laura Mitchell, said the office would reopen later that day after a brief safety inspection. “We’re grateful that no one was inside the building and that the driver is receiving care,” Mitchell said.

What to do if you experience drowsy driving

Durham Police recommends the following steps for drivers who feel drowsy:

  • Pull over in a safe area as soon as possible.
  • Take a short nap of 15‑20 minutes if you can.
  • Consume caffeine, but do not rely on it as a sole solution.
  • Switch drivers if another licensed driver is available.
  • Avoid driving during peak fatigue periods, such as late night or early morning hours.

Residents who have questions about road safety or wish to report hazardous driving conditions can contact the Durham Police non‑emergency line at (919) 555‑1234.
