Driver Escapes After Car Struck by Train on Northwest Oklahoma City Crossing

Oklahoma City Police Department investigators responded to a call around 4:00 a.m. Saturday after a driver reported that their car was trapped on the railroad tracks at the Britton and Western crossing in the city’s northwest quadrant. The driver managed to exit the vehicle before the train made contact and then left the scene.

Incident details

According to police, the train was traveling at a reduced speed when it struck the car. Officers believe the driver ignored construction and detour signage in the area, attempting to cross the tracks despite the warnings. The impact caused damage to the vehicle, but no injuries were reported.

Safety concerns at the crossing

The Britton and Western intersection has been the focus of recent construction work, including temporary detour signs intended to guide motorists safely around active railroad tracks. Police noted that the driver’s decision to bypass these signs may have contributed to the accident.

City officials have long emphasized the importance of obeying railroad crossing signals and signage, especially in zones undergoing construction. Ignoring such warnings not only endangers the driver but also puts train crews and nearby residents at risk.

Police investigation

Law enforcement is reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses to determine why the driver chose to proceed onto the tracks. While the train’s operator reported no injuries among crew members, the incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance at rail crossings throughout Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma City Police Department encourages anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the department’s non‑emergency line.

Preventive measures

Officials remind motorists that railroad crossings are high‑risk locations and that construction zones often feature altered traffic patterns. Drivers are urged to obey all posted signs, use designated detour routes, and never attempt to cross tracks when a train is approaching, even if it appears to be moving slowly.

Community safety groups continue to advocate for improved signage and public education campaigns to reduce the likelihood of similar accidents in the future.
