Dream Con Brings Black Nerd Culture to Texas

Dream Con, a Black-owned gaming and anime convention, has been held in Texas for the past two summers, with its most recent event in Houston drawing a record-breaking 45,000 attendees. The convention, which features an artist alley, cosplay contests, gaming tournaments, concerts, panels, and sporting events, has become a space for Black nerds, also known as Blerds, to gather and celebrate their love of anime, video games, and pop culture.

Creating a Safe Space

Dream Con was founded by a group of YouTubers who were often ignored or turned away from other anime and comic conventions because of their race. The group, known as RDC World, decided to create their own convention, where Black fans could feel welcome and included. The convention has grown exponentially since its debut in Waco in 2018, with attendance increasing by 70-fold.

Despite its success, Dream Con’s future in Texas is uncertain. The convention’s founders are seeking financial and marketing support from the city or state to keep the event in Houston. Without this support, the convention may be forced to move to another city, such as Atlanta or Los Angeles.

Economic Impact

Dream Con has had a significant economic impact on Houston, generating over $19 million in revenue for the city last year. The convention has also created a platform for Black creators to showcase their work and connect with fans. Vendors at the convention have praised the event for providing a space for them to sell their merchandise and reach a diverse audience.
