Dr. Drew challenges Ryan Reynolds’ bleak view of the 1980s

During a recent interview promoting his new Apple TV film “Mayday,” set in 1987, Ryan Reynolds described the 1980s as a “brutal, brutal time for people” and warned that nostalgia can mask the era’s hardships.

Reynolds cited the lingering Cold War tension and the recent memory of the Cuban Missile Crisis as evidence that the decade was far from carefree. “It was a tumultuous period, but you look back at it now and you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah. Top Gun. Cocaine!’ Like, ‘No!’ It was really scary,” he said.

Dr. Drew pushes back

Celebrity physician Dr. Drew Pinsky, a longtime fan of Reynolds, took issue with the actor’s assessment on the “Actual Friends” podcast. While acknowledging Reynolds’ talent, Dr. Drew argued the 1980s were actually a period of relief and celebration after the turmoil of the 1970s.

“The ’80s was this huge relief that came,” he said. “Yes, there was a lot of hatred for Reagan at the beginning, but things went so well it all went away, and it was just one relief, one celebration after another for like eight years.” He concluded with a simple question: “What happened to fun? The ’80s were just flat‑out fun. People were having fun, and we just don’t seem to have fun anymore.”

Broader conversation

The exchange highlights a broader cultural conversation about how generations remember the past. While some view the 1980s through a lens of iconic movies, music, and fashion, others point to geopolitical tensions and social challenges that shaped the era.

Both Reynolds and Dr. Drew agree that nostalgia can blur historical realities, but they differ on whether the decade should be remembered primarily for its hardships or its moments of joy.
