Downtown Fort Worth Inc. outlines innovative projects shaping the city’s future

Fort Worth – In a recent episode of Fort Worth Innovates, Andy Taft, President of Downtown Fort Worth, Inc., detailed the organization’s long‑term vision for the city’s urban core. Over the past two decades, the nonprofit has coordinated development, attracted new institutions and championed data‑based decision‑making to make downtown more walkable, vibrant and economically resilient.

Building on past successes

Taft highlighted several milestones, including the successful partnership that helped bring Texas A&M’s expanded presence into the downtown area. By aligning university research with city planning, the collaboration has spurred job creation and reinforced Fort Worth’s reputation as a hub for innovation.

Switchyard Innovation District and future transit

The upcoming Switchyard Innovation District is a centerpiece of the plan. The district will feature expanded transit capacity, new mixed‑use buildings and a focus on sustainable design. Taft emphasized that increased transit options around the district will reduce congestion and improve access for residents and commuters alike.

From grackles to federal regulation

One of the most unexpected stories Taft shared involved a persistent grackle problem downtown. Rather than relying on costly chemical controls, the organization partnered with local falconers and conducted a series of data‑driven experiments. The success led to a change in federal falconry regulations, providing a natural, humane solution that other cities along the birds’ migratory corridor have begun to adopt.

Transforming public spaces

Several flagship projects are slated for the near future. Burnett Park will be reimagined with expanded green space and interactive amenities. General Worth Square, Paddock Park and Heritage Plaza are each receiving design upgrades to encourage community gatherings and outdoor recreation. A proposed canopy walk will physically link downtown to the Trinity River, creating a continuous pedestrian corridor that highlights the city’s waterfront.

The former Central Library site is under review for mixed‑use development that could include affordable housing, office space and cultural venues. Meanwhile, Panther Island continues to evolve as a mixed‑use waterfront district, promising new residential options and commercial opportunities.

Data‑driven planning for a thriving downtown

Taft stressed that research and data remain at the core of every decision. By tracking foot traffic, economic indicators and community feedback, Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. can adjust projects in real time, ensuring resources are allocated where they have the greatest impact.

“Our goal is to build on Fort Worth’s entrepreneurial spirit while creating a more connected, walkable and vibrant downtown,” Taft said. “When we combine innovative thinking with solid data, we set the stage for long‑term prosperity that benefits families, businesses and faith‑based communities alike.”

Community involvement

The organization invites residents to stay informed and participate in upcoming public meetings. Information about project timelines, design concepts and opportunities for input can be found on the Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. website.
