Rescuers are working to save nearly 50 bottlenose dolphins stranded in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the largest known stranding of the marine mammal in the state’s history. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) reported that the dolphins were found stranded at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, Massachusetts.
Rescue Efforts
The IFAW said that the dolphins refloated with the incoming tide, but an additional five to six animals died before their team arrived. On the second day of rescue efforts, four bottlenose dolphins were initially found stranded, and that number quickly multiplied to 19 across three locations along a nine-mile stretch of coastline.
According to Brian Sharp, program director for Marine Mammal Rescue at IFAW, the animals are in decent condition, and two have been fitted with satellite tags to monitor their movements. The team will continue to monitor and coax them out of Wellfleet Bay to give them the best chance at survival.
