A recent accident on the Teton River in Driggs, Idaho, resulted in the drowning of a dog, despite the dog wearing a personal floatation device (PFD). The incident occurred when a river party, including kayakers and paddleboarders, got caught in a large, overhanging willow bush.
Rescue Efforts
Teton County Idaho Search and Rescue (TCISAR) was mobilized to respond to the incident. TCISAR Director Ron Razzolini led the rescue and noted that the river is running high and fast, adding that it’s the tail end of runoff season. Razzolini recommends making a quick visual assessment of the river before embarking on a float trip at this time of year.
Razzolini advised, ‘Watch the weather, and take a look at the river when you drive over it or at the boat ramps and you can see if it’s pushing out of its banks and into the fields, which is what’s going on right now.’ He also emphasized the importance of listening to one’s gut and calling 911 if help is needed.
