In a significant breakthrough for local law enforcement, DNA evidence has connected Marvin Lee Holloway, a Texas inmate already serving a life sentence for a 1988 murder, to the 1986 cold case murder of Ruby Battee in Dallas. This development brings closure to a case that has remained unsolved for nearly 40 years.
Cold Case Resolution
Ruby Battee was tragically murdered and sexually assaulted on May 27, 1986, after an unidentified suspect forcefully entered her home. At the time, investigators found limited evidence, although viable DNA was collected from Battee’s clothing. However, the forensic technology of the 1980s was not advanced enough to extract definitive evidence from these samples.
The case took a turn in January 2025 when Dallas homicide detectives submitted previously untested items, including swabs from a sexual assault examination and clothing from the crime scene, to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification. By April 13, 2026, a partial male DNA profile was developed and entered into the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) database. This led to a match with Holloway less than a month later.
Holloway was originally arrested in 1988 for the murder of his co-worker, Emily Proctor, and has been serving a life sentence since May 1989. Following the DNA match, Detective Andrea Isom obtained a search warrant for a new DNA sample from Holloway. On May 13, 2026, Isom and her partner, Detective David Grubbs, visited Holloway at a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility in Beeville, Texas, to collect the sample and question him about Battee’s murder. The new evidence led to a murder warrant being secured against Holloway.
Law Enforcement’s Dedication
Dallas Police Chief Comeaux praised the dedication of the detectives involved, stating, “The Dallas Police Department houses some of the world’s best detectives. They are meticulous, patient, and leave no stone unturned when it comes to investigating cold cases—especially ones where hope seems lost. I hope this serves as a reminder to victims as well as criminals who believe they have gotten away with their crimes. Justice will come.”
This case highlights the importance of advancements in forensic technology and the relentless pursuit of justice by law enforcement officers. The resolution of Ruby Battee’s murder offers a sense of closure to her family and the community, reinforcing the message that justice can prevail, even after many years.
