District 8 Candidates Share Top Priorities

The District 8 supervisor election is approaching, with four candidates competing to replace current Supervisor Rafael Mandelman. The district includes neighborhoods such as the Castro, Noe Valley, and Glen Park.

Candidate Priorities

Each candidate was asked to share their number one issue in the election and how they plan to address it. Gary McCoy, a former staffer to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, cited affordability as his top priority. He plans to build housing at every level, from affordable to market-rate, while defending rent control and tenant protections.

Michael Nguyen, a patent attorney, also emphasized affordability. He supports social housing and permanently affordable, city-owned housing. Nguyen plans to fight for tenant protections and require developers to pay their fair share.

Darshini Patel, a former DoorDash employee and Obama White House staffer, highlighted the need for follow-through on promises. She plans to use all available tools to unlock housing, improve permitting timelines, and explore community land trusts. Patel also aims to simplify the process of opening new childcare centers.

Manny Yekutiel, the founder and owner of Manny’s, made making San Francisco affordable for working people and families his top priority. He plans to build 10,000 new homes in District 8 and work to reduce childcare costs and strengthen public education.
