Disney+ announces new “Simpsons: Yellow Mirror” special premiering Aug. 26

Disney+ unveiled the trailer for its latest Simpsons exclusive, “The Simpsons: Yellow Mirror,” during the recent D23 panel. The preview shows the familiar Springfield family confronting surreal technology and unsettling revelations about reality.

According to the episode description, a defective lamp reveals a heartbreaking truth about what Homer believes is real, while an AI‑powered tablet forms a bond with Maggie and ultimately exerts control over her. The special is presented as two dark, curious tales that explore the bizarre and the uncanny.

In the trailer, a teenage Homer, recalling his high‑school days, tells his friend Barney, “My life as I know it never existed!” Barney replies, “Well, that sucks. On the bright side, it’s fish stick Friday.” The line hints at the show’s trademark humor amid the more eerie premise.

The “Yellow Mirror” special is set to premiere on Disney+ on August 26. It will be available to all subscribers of the streaming service, which also hosts the full catalog of Simpsons seasons via Hulu and Disney+.

During the D23 presentation, the creators also confirmed that a new installment of the annual “Treehouse of Horror” anthology will arrive in October, continuing the tradition of Halloween‑themed episodes that blend satire with spooky storytelling.

Fans of the long‑running animated series can look forward to the blend of familiar characters with contemporary themes such as artificial intelligence and the nature of perception. The AI tablet storyline reflects broader cultural conversations about technology’s role in family life, while the lamp’s reality‑shifting effect adds a philosophical twist to the family’s usual antics.

Disney+ has positioned the special as a flagship event for the platform’s upcoming fall lineup, aiming to attract both longtime Simpsons viewers and new audiences drawn by the series’ cultural relevance. The streaming service continues to leverage its extensive library of classic and contemporary content to compete in the crowded streaming market.

For those interested in revisiting earlier seasons, all episodes of “The Simpsons” are currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+. The Walt Disney Company, the parent of ABC, owns both platforms, consolidating the show’s distribution under one corporate umbrella.

What to Expect

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the trailer suggests a mix of humor, family dynamics, and speculative tech themes. The AI tablet’s relationship with Maggie may raise questions about parental oversight and the influence of digital devices on children, a topic that resonates with many families today.

“Yellow Mirror” joins a growing list of Simpsons specials that experiment with format and tone, offering viewers a fresh take on the beloved characters while maintaining the series’ signature satirical edge.
