Detroit School Board Reviews Budget with Focus on Pay Increases and Enrollment

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is preparing to vote on a proposed $1.1 billion budget for the 2026-27 school year, which aims to increase pay for all employees, expand initiatives to reduce chronic absenteeism, and hire more counselors. The budget also plans to increase funding for teacher supplies, alleviating the financial burden on families.

Budget Highlights and Challenges

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti presented the budget to the school board, noting that it was conservatively built with the current state funding proposals in mind. The budget anticipates a 1% enrollment increase, aligning with statewide trends. However, Vitti warned of uncertainties beyond the next school year due to rising costs and the end of a $94 million literacy lawsuit settlement, which had previously supported key initiatives.

Board President LaTrice McClendon inquired about the feasibility of establishing a minimum wage of $21.45 per hour within the district, similar to the city of Detroit. Vitti responded that an analysis had been conducted, but the cost exceeded what the district could afford in the next two years.

Focus on Neighborhood Schools

Board members emphasized the importance of promoting neighborhood schools. Bessie Harris, a board member, highlighted the need to showcase the strengths of local schools beyond the well-known application and test-in institutions. She urged the district to celebrate the unique offerings of all schools to attract more students.

McClendon expressed a desire for a more ambitious enrollment goal, suggesting a 3% to 4% increase. She emphasized the district’s accomplishments and the potential to attract students who may not be aware of the opportunities available.

The board will vote on the budget next month, with the aim of balancing financial constraints while continuing to support educational initiatives that benefit Detroit’s students and families.
