Detroit’s University District is set to welcome a meaningful new addition to the neighborhood: 36 affordable homes designed specifically for senior residents. Mayor Sheffield joined community partners this week to celebrate the start of construction on the Gesu Senior Housing development, marking a milestone moment for one of the city’s established residential neighborhoods.
The project brings dedicated, affordable housing to Detroit seniors in an area known for its strong community ties and tree-lined streets. The groundbreaking signals real, concrete progress for older Detroiters seeking stable, quality housing close to the communities they’ve called home for decades.
The good news kept coming across the city as Detroiters also gathered to mark Juneteenth 2026 with the Hart of Detroit Summer Festival. Comedian Donny Comedy was among those building excitement ahead of the celebration, hyping up the city and sharing who he was looking forward to seeing at the event. The festival brought together residents for a day of community, culture, and Detroit pride on one of the year’s most meaningful holidays.
Together, the two moments capture a city investing in its people — from ensuring seniors have a safe and affordable place to call home, to coming together in joyful celebration of history and community.
