El Paso, Texas – Early detection of breast cancer saves lives, but anxiety still keeps many women from scheduling their yearly mammogram. Desert Imaging has been tackling that fear for 24 years with a unique, patient‑focused program: mammogram hostesses.
What a mammogram hostess does
When a patient arrives for her appointment, a hostess greets her at the door, helps her change into a gown, and provides wipes to remove any deodorant or lotion that could affect the images. Hostess Anissa Almanza explains that she stays with the patient for the entire exam, offering reassurance and calm commentary.
“If a patient is shaking or has a panic attack, I tell her it’s going to be fine and help her relax,” Almanza said. “That little bit of comfort makes a big difference.”
Technologists notice smoother exams
Mammography technologist Carmen Marquez says the hostesses allow her to concentrate on the technical aspects of the scan. “When the patient knows what’s happening and feels supported, the whole process runs more smoothly,” she noted.
Marquez also highlighted a cultural component. “We’re Hispanic, and many of us were taught that it’s improper to touch our own bodies or let others examine them,” she said. “Having a trusted person by our side helps break down that barrier.”
Impact on screening rates
Health surveys indicate that nearly half of women delay or avoid routine mammograms because of fear or anxiety. By providing a compassionate companion, Desert Imaging hopes to reverse that trend and increase the number of women who receive timely screenings.
Almanza described the reward she feels when a patient returns year after year, especially if early detection leads to successful treatment. “It’s gratifying to know we played a part in saving a life,” she said.
Marquez echoed that sentiment, noting that patients who discover cancer early often credit the supportive environment for their willingness to follow through with treatment recommendations.
