Deschutes Public Library Board Names Chantal Strobel Interim Director

The Deschutes Public Library Board announced Tuesday that Chantal Strobel will serve as interim library director for the next twelve months. Strobel, a 32‑year veteran of the library system, steps into the role following the retirement of longtime director Todd Dunkelberg, who will officially leave office on August 28, 2026.

Experience and transition

Strobel has spent her entire career at Deschutes Public Library, most recently as assistant director of community engagement since 2023. For the past 16 years she worked closely with Dunkelberg, learning the district’s operations and strategic priorities. In the weeks before Dunkelberg’s departure, the two will complete a handoff of leadership responsibilities to ensure a smooth transition.

Interim priorities

During her interim tenure, Strobel’s primary objectives are two‑fold: to oversee the continued opening of the new central library and to keep the downtown library renovation on schedule. Both projects are critical to the district’s long‑term vision of expanding services and modernizing facilities for Bend residents.

“I’ve been able to be a part of many different opportunities and helping to set the vision that got us to this point. It’s been a wonderful journey, and I’m really excited to have this next year to continue the journey and keep everything moving forward,” Strobel said.

Board’s next steps

The board said it will continue its search for a permanent director while Strobel leads the district over the coming year. The appointment provides continuity for staff, patrons, and the community as the library system navigates major capital projects and expands programming.

Deschutes Public Library serves the Bend community with multiple branches, offering books, digital resources, and a range of educational and cultural programs. The upcoming central library, slated to open later this year, will add meeting spaces, a technology hub, and expanded collections to meet growing demand.

With the downtown renovation already underway, the board emphasized the importance of staying on track to avoid cost overruns and delays. The interim director will work closely with the city’s planning department, contractors, and community volunteers to ensure the project reflects local needs and values.

Community impact

Local families and educators have welcomed the board’s decision, noting that steady leadership is essential for maintaining library services that support literacy, lifelong learning, and community cohesion. The library remains a cornerstone of Bend’s cultural life, providing a safe space for children, seniors, and anyone seeking information or connection.

As the library district moves forward, the board encourages residents to stay engaged through public meetings, volunteer opportunities, and feedback channels. The interim appointment underscores the district’s commitment to stability, transparency, and service to the community.
