For five decades the Young Women’s Resource Center has been a lifeline for pregnant teens and young mothers in Des Moines. The nonprofit, located at 818 5th Ave., now assists roughly 600 women annually through its Young Moms program, which targets mothers‑to‑be and mothers under age 24.
Free, confidential assistance
All services are provided at no cost and with strict confidentiality. Participants receive essential items such as baby clothing, nutritious food, and feminine hygiene products. In addition, the center offers educational workshops that cover pregnancy health, newborn care, and self‑care for the mothers themselves.
Transportation remains a hurdle
Transportation is one of the biggest barriers for the center’s clients. Many young women lack a driver’s license or reliable vehicle, and while the center provides free rides to its downtown location, the service cannot reach the rural parts of Polk County. Center CEO Rachel Woodhouse says, “There’s just always more that can be done. Knowing that the resources exist is not enough; we must connect every young mom to them.”
Looking toward virtual outreach
To bridge the distance gap, the organization is evaluating virtual service options that could extend its reach beyond the city limits. Partnerships with schools across Polk County have helped identify some pregnant students, but data shows that many young parents remain uncounted, often because stigma, trauma, or cultural and religious concerns keep them from disclosing their pregnancies.
Woodhouse explains, “If we don’t have the appropriate supports that are coordinated to target those populations—ensuring prenatal care and teaching moms how to care for themselves—it can create problems for a lot of different folks in their spheres.” She adds that schools are a primary conduit for connecting with young mothers, and the center is working to locate those who are not captured in school data.
