Rainy weather forced families in Des Moines to change their Father’s Day plans, with many finding alternative activities indoors. The City of Des Moines closed public pools and drained splash pads due to the wet weather, despite planned free admission for fathers at city aquatic facilities.
Alternative Plans
Some families opted to visit the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, which offered free admission to fathers on Father’s Day. The garden’s indoor exhibits provided a dry alternative for families looking to spend the holiday together. John Phillips, a father, said, ‘We were going to try to do the zoo this morning, and then it was raining. We had to come up with Plan B.’ Phillips and his family ended up at the botanical garden, where they enjoyed the indoor exhibits.
Other families chose to stick with their plans despite the rain. Jamie Megison said, ‘Even if it was raining, umbrellas are a thing. They exist.’ Terry Megison added, ‘It’s awful important to spend time with family, because family is what we have.’ Emileo and Anayi, two children, expressed their love and appreciation for their fathers, highlighting the importance of family on Father’s Day.
