Des Moines community rides rain‑soaked route to fund free cancer screenings

Hundreds of Des Moines residents gathered on a rainy Sunday to ride for a cause that hits families at the heart of the community: early detection of breast and cervical cancer. The annual “Bras for the Cause” ride, organized by an all‑volunteer board, saw over 400 cyclists—more than any previous year—travel the city’s streets to raise money for free screenings.

Volunteer board focuses on early detection

The board behind the event, composed of local volunteers, aims to combat breast and cervical cancers across Iowa by funding mammograms and Pap tests for those without insurance or with limited coverage. “Something keeps me coming back, and it’s obviously the mission we have. We’re making a difference,” said Katie Neibauer, board president for Bras for the Cause. “There’s a lot of people out there. Breast cancer or any cancer in general affects everyone.”

Funds go directly to local health facilities

All money raised is funneled to Iowa health facilities that provide the screenings at no cost to patients. By covering the expense of mammograms and cervical screenings, the program helps uninsured and underinsured Iowans catch potential cancers early, when treatment is most effective and less costly.

Community response and future outlook

The turnout this year reflects growing community awareness of the importance of preventive health care. Participants ranged from seasoned cyclists to families with young children, all united by a shared commitment to protect their neighbors’ health. Organizers expect the momentum to continue, planning to expand outreach to additional counties and to increase the number of screenings funded in coming years.

Local health officials praised the effort, noting that early detection saves lives and reduces the long‑term burden on families and the health system. The event also underscores the role of faith‑based and family‑oriented nonprofits in filling gaps left by limited public health resources.

As the rain cleared, riders gathered for a brief ceremony where volunteers received thank‑you ribbons and shared stories of loved ones affected by cancer. The sense of solidarity was palpable, reinforcing the idea that a strong, faith‑grounded community can rally together to protect its most vulnerable members.

Bras for the Cause will hold its next ride in the spring, inviting more Des Moines residents to join the effort. Those interested in volunteering or donating can visit the organization’s website for details on how to contribute to the life‑saving mission.
