The Des Moines City Council unanimously voted to reject proposed pay raises for the mayor and council members. The proposal would have increased the mayor’s salary from $70,000 to more than $75,000 annually. Council members also turned down a nearly $3,000 annual raise for themselves.
Several council members pointed to the city’s projected $17 million budget shortfall as the reason for their ‘no’ vote.
