A deputy U.S. marshal was shot and killed Monday afternoon in Alexandria, Louisiana, while attempting to execute an arrest warrant on a fugitive, federal officials announced.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Andrew Hanson, 36, was working alongside members of the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office to apprehend 48-year-old Clarence Frazier. According to authorities, the warrant was issued after Frazier failed to appear in state court for a trial regarding a charge of sexual battery with a person with infirmities.
Investigation Ongoing
Law enforcement officers tracked Frazier to a residence on Rutland Road, where they secured a search warrant for the property. Officials stated that officers approached the home wearing clear law enforcement markings, announced their presence, and forced entry into the building.
Frazier barricaded himself inside a bedroom and opened fire on the arriving officers, striking Hanson. The deputy succumbed to his injuries at approximately 4:45 p.m. CDT. Frazier remained inside the bedroom during a subsequent standoff with law enforcement before being taken into custody.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing investigation into the shooting, with assistance from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Hanson, who went by Drew, joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 2020. His career with the agency included assignments in both the Southern District of Alabama and the Western District of Louisiana. Before joining the Marshals Service, Hanson worked for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New Orleans and Customs and Border Protection in Nogales, Arizona. His prior law enforcement experience also included positions with the Ocean Springs Police Department, the Mississippi Department of Transportation, and the Gulfport Police Department.
“The nation lost a hero Monday. We are all extremely saddened by this tragic loss of Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson when he was shot and killed by a dangerous fugitive,” U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta said in a statement. “His life mattered. Our thoughts and prayers are now with his family and friends, and our law enforcement community. Drew was selflessly devoted to making his community and this nation safer. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
Hanson is survived by his wife and two children.
