A group of 49 parents, students, and community members have signed a petition calling for the removal of Denver School of the Arts band director Michael Paulez, citing allegations of social-emotional abuse. The petition, sent to school and district officials, claims that Paulez has a history of demeaning and humiliating students, leading some to leave the school.
Allegations of Abuse
According to the petition, Paulez’s behavior has created a toxic environment, with students reporting feelings of shame, humiliation, and resentment towards the music program. Parents have also come forward, sharing their own experiences with Paulez’s condescending and aggressive behavior.
Miles Cohen, a 15-year-old percussionist, recounted an incident where Paulez accused him of being selfish and taking time away from the class after he accidentally dropped his wallet. Cohen’s parents, Blake and Clarissa, expressed concern about the impact of Paulez’s behavior on their son and other students.
Lack of Response from School Administrators
Despite repeated complaints from parents and students, school administrators have failed to take meaningful action. DSA Principal Brian Cochran responded to one parent’s email, stating that meetings with concerned families often end in frustration and that the school is limited in its ability to address the issue due to labor laws and union protections.
The Denver Public Schools district has also declined to comment on the matter, citing institutional policies and procedures for reviewing complaints against staff members.
