Where the Colorado River Meets Craft Cocktails: A Day at Turf Soaring School

There are mornings in the Sonoran Desert when the sky looks so impossibly blue and wide that it seems almost criminal to admire it from ground level. That thought crossed my mind the first time I pulled into the dusty lot at Arizona Soaring Inc., better known to locals as Turf Soaring School, tucked out near Peoria on the northwestern edge of the Valley. I had come to take a glider ride, half-expecting a quirky novelty. What I got was one of the most genuinely moving experiences I’ve had in years of traveling Arizona.

Arizona Soaring has been quietly operating out of Turf Runway Airport since the 1970s, making it one of the longest-running soaring operations in the Southwest. The setup is charmingly unpretentious — a cluster of hangars, a few weathered picnic tables, and a whole fleet of sleek, whisper-quiet sailplanes lined up like giant white birds waiting for a thermal. The staff are a mix of seasoned pilots and passionate instructors who clearly love what they do. Nobody here is trying to upsell you on anything. They just want to get you in the air.

The process is remarkably straightforward. You book a scenic or instructional flight in advance, show up about fifteen minutes early, get a brief but thorough safety orientation, and then climb into a two-seat Schweizer or DG sailplane alongside your certified pilot. A small tow plane drags you aloft to around three or four thousand feet above the desert floor, the cable releases with a satisfying thunk, and suddenly the engine noise disappears entirely. What replaces it is something close to silence — just the soft rush of wind over fiberglass and the occasional creak of the cockpit as you bank into a thermal column rising off the warm desert below.

The views on a clear morning are staggering. You can trace the jagged ridgeline of the White Tank Mountains to the west, watch the ordered grid of Phoenix neighborhoods spread out toward South Mountain, and on the best days catch the snow-dusted crown of the San Francisco Peaks up near Flagstaff, more than a hundred miles away. It is the kind of panorama that resets your sense of scale and reminds you just how vast and varied this landscape really is.

Instructional flights are available for those who want to log actual stick time and work toward a glider rating, and Arizona Soaring is well regarded in the soaring community for producing confident, well-trained pilots. But you don’t need any ambitions beyond curiosity to enjoy a scenic ride. Flights typically run between fifteen and thirty minutes depending on conditions and the package you choose, and prices are genuinely reasonable — far more accessible than you might expect for something this memorable.

If you’re visiting Phoenix with a travel companion who claims they’ve already done everything worth doing here, bring them to Turf Soaring School. The look on someone’s face the moment that tow cable releases and the silence sets in — that’s worth the drive out to Peoria all on its own. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends, as this place draws a loyal following of repeat visitors who come back every season. Come early, bring sunglasses, and wear comfortable layers. The desert morning air at altitude has a bite to it, even in summer.

Arizona Soaring Inc. is located at 18623 N. 165th Ave. in Peoria, about 35 minutes northwest of downtown Phoenix. They operate year-round, and their website offers current pricing and booking. Trust me — once you’ve soared silent over the Sonoran Desert, regular sightseeing is going to feel a little flat.
