Denton Independent School District announced a new Honor Card program designed to welcome resident veterans and active‑duty service members to district events at no charge. The initiative reflects DISD’s commitment to honoring those who have defended our nation and to strengthening the bond between our schools and the military families who live within the district.
What the Honor Card Covers
Cardholders receive complimentary general admission to a wide range of DISD home events, including:
- Regular‑season athletic home games on DISD campuses – football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer.
- Student performances such as band, choir, orchestra, theater and dance productions.
Events that are excluded from the program include University Interscholastic League playoff games, tournaments, invitationals, sold‑out events, and any events not hosted by DISD.
Eligibility and How to Obtain a Card
To qualify, veterans and active‑duty service members must either reside within DISD boundaries or be a family member of a DISD student, regardless of where they live. The card is free of charge.
Applicants must present a valid identification card showing name, date of birth and home address, along with proof of military service – a military ID, a Texas driver’s license with the veteran designation, a DD‑214, or a VA‑issued veteran card.
Cards can be picked up at DISD’s central offices in the Stephens Building at 1307 N. Locust St., Denton, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.‑4 p.m.

“Service is something we talk about in our classrooms, and it lands differently when students can see it in the people around them,” DISD Superintendent Susannah O’Bara said. “These men and women have already given a great deal on behalf of others. We want them in our gyms and our auditoriums cheering for our kids because what our students learn from having them there is truly invaluable.”
Nick Petito, DISD chief communications and marketing officer, added, “We wanted the process to be simple and the welcome to be unmistakable. The card is free, it takes just a few minutes to pick up and it opens the door to hundreds of events across the district all year long.”
Related Initiatives
DISD recently launched a Gold Card program for residents and family members over 60, which distributed more than 500 cards within its first two days. The Honor Card joins that effort, further demonstrating the district’s dedication to inclusive community engagement.

How to Use the Card
Cardholders must present their Honor Card at the point of entry for any qualifying DISD event. The card is issued on a one‑per‑person basis and is non‑transferable.
