Democratic strategist James Carville warned that the party needs a candidate who can win the presidency, regardless of their background or identity. Carville and his co-host Al Hunt discussed the prospects of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a potential 2028 contender.
Electability Over Identity
Carville argued that the party’s focus should be on electability, rather than identity or ideology. He stated that the Democratic Party is a mainstream progressive party and that Ocasio-Cortez, while a formidable communicator, may not be the best fit for the party’s needs.
Hunt agreed, saying that the country is ready for a female president, but the party needs to put up a good candidate. He noted that quality is what counts, regardless of the candidate’s identity.
Carville also discussed the reasons behind the losses of previous Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. He argued that Clinton lost due to a distributional fluke, while Harris lost because she was seen as a continuation of the status quo of the Biden era.
