Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El‑Sayed deflects questions on ties to streamer Hasan Piker

Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El‑Sayed, encountered a wave of online backlash after reporters pressed him about his relationship with far‑left streamer Hasan Piker. When asked about the influence of the popular Twitch personality on his campaign, El‑Sayed responded that the race is about Michigan and that he is “not interested in a conversation about a social media person in California.”

He added, “But I don’t want to have a conversation about a Twitch streamer in California. This is not a serious conversation.” Fox News Digital followed up, asking why El‑Sayed had brought Piker to the state if he considered the matter unimportant. El‑Sayed dismissed the line of questioning and later referred to Piker as “a single streamer from California” when asked if he would condemn the influencer.

Social‑media reaction

The clip quickly spread across platforms, drawing ridicule and criticism from conservatives and some Democrats alike. Commentators on X (formerly Twitter) labeled the incident a sign of panic, noting that El‑Sayed had previously appeared alongside Piker at campaign events and taken promotional photos before attempting to distance himself.

Republican strategist Kyle Martinsen wrote, “I’m interested in it so there’s a problem here,” while Townhall columnist Kurt Schlichter called the situation a “problem” as well. “The Charlie Kirk Show” executive producer Andrew Kolvet observed that El‑Sayed seemed to be “panicking” after shifting from campaign stops with Piker to calling him a “media person in California.” Former Senate candidate Joe Concha compared the controversy to the 2020 presidential race, suggesting the candidate might be “worse than Kamala.”

Piker’s involvement and past remarks

Hasan Piker, who boasts roughly 10 million followers, has become a flashpoint within the Democratic Party due to prior controversial statements, including a claim that “America deserved 9/11.” He confirmed that El‑Sayed asked him to “stump” for the Senate campaign, saying, “The reason why, when Abdul asked for me to come on this journey with him, I said yes, absolutely.” The streamer also referenced an earlier rally where he was invited by the candidate.

Pro‑Israel activist Adam Milstein highlighted that El‑Sayed has yet to publicly condemn Piker, despite the latter’s recent inflammatory remarks about a viral audio clip involving Jewish Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss.

Election context

El‑Sayed will face Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. The race is seen as a potential determinant of which party will control the U.S. Senate. Fox News reached out to the El‑Sayed campaign for comment but did not receive a response.
