Democratic Party of Michigan convention marred by botched land acknowledgment

LANSING, Michigan – The Michigan Democratic Party’s nominating convention on Sunday turned into a spectacle when party vice chair Portia Roberson attempted a land acknowledgment that quickly fell apart. Roberson began by stating the event was held on the ancestral, traditional and contemporary land of the Anishinaabe, Three Fires Confederacy, but was interrupted by audience members correcting her pronunciation of “Anishinaabe.”

Roberson responded, “Say it again for me,” and invited a woman in a white t‑shirt to demonstrate the correct pronunciation. After several attempts, Roberson managed to repeat the word into the microphone, then continued with a list of tribes, including the Odawa, Ottawa, Ojibwe, Chippewa and Potawatomi. The final tribe name also drew shouts from the crowd over a mispronunciation.

Roberson admitted she had rushed her preparation, saying, “Usually I rehearse before I come out. This time I rushed it and I didn’t rehearse. I apologize,” before leaving the stage.

Convention highlights and political context

The convention, held in the Lansing Center, featured Michigan’s Democratic nominees for statewide office. Candidates took the stage one by one, delivering brief speeches while supporters displayed campaign memorabilia. The event’s most prominent figure was U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El‑Sayed, a progressive who criticized President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance on economic issues and advocated for a public‑option health plan.

Other notable speakers included Secretary of State candidate Jocelyn Benson, who is also running for governor, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, a software engineer seeking the Secretary of State office. Gilchrist pledged to protect Michiganders’ data from federal overreach, echoing a broader party theme of defending personal privacy.

Party response and broader implications

The Democratic Party of Michigan did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the land acknowledgment mishap. The incident underscores the growing emphasis within the party on cultural and identity‑focused rituals, which many conservatives view as performative and divisive.

Republican leaders, including Rep. John James, have repeatedly accused Michigan Democrats of prioritizing ideology over the concerns of everyday Michiganders. The convention’s focus on issues such as data privacy, health care, and cultural acknowledgment reflects the party’s attempt to rally its base ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
