Palmetto State Democrats have chosen Dr. Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, as their candidate to face incumbent Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., in the November election. Andrews, who is a familiar face in South Carolina politics, survived a three-way primary contest on Tuesday.
Andrews’ Focus on Health and Human Services Secretary
While Andrews’ primary focus is to unseat Graham, her larger target is Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom she vowed to ‘lead the charge to impeach and remove’ at a recent rally with voters. Andrews has criticized Kennedy for his role in the anti-vaccine movement, which she believes has led to a decline in herd immunity and an increase in outbreaks of infections like measles.
In an op-ed piece, Andrews charged that Kennedy’s leadership has been detrimental to public health, stating that ‘we’re kidding ourselves if we pretend leadership doesn’t matter.’ Andrews also emphasized that trust in public health institutions takes years to build and can be lost quickly.
Graham Faces Primary Challenge
Meanwhile, Sen. Graham is facing a six-way primary challenge, which includes businessman Mark Lynch. The contest is seen as a test of President Donald Trump’s endorsement power versus the fraying edges of his own Make America Great Again movement.
