Dell Launches Affordable XPS 13 Laptop to Compete with Apple’s MacBook Neo

Dell has announced the release of its most affordable laptop, the XPS 13, in a strategic move to capture market share from Apple’s MacBook Neo. Priced at $699, and offering a student discount to $599 for those aged 16 and older during the back-to-school season, Dell aims to appeal to students and young professionals seeking high-quality computing at accessible prices.

Competing with Apple

The XPS 13 is positioned as a direct competitor to Apple’s MacBook Neo, which was launched in March starting at $599, with a student price of $500. Dell’s new model is touted as the company’s thinnest and lightest laptop yet, weighing about half a pound less than the MacBook Neo, and featuring a larger display. This move underscores Dell’s commitment to providing better options in a price-sensitive market, especially as the industry grapples with tighter memory-chip supplies.

Market Strategy and Features

Jeff Clarke, Dell’s Chief Operating Officer, acknowledged the quality of Apple’s product but emphasized the need for more accessible options for consumers. The XPS 13 is part of Dell’s broader strategy announced in January at the Consumer Electronics Show to compete across all price points in the consumer PC market. The company also reintroduced its popular XPS lineup earlier this year, aiming to counteract the anticipated slowdown in PC shipments due to rising memory chip costs.

The XPS 13 will initially be available with Intel Core Series 3 processors, with a version featuring Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors and a new Storm color option expected later this summer.
