Deerfield Township has unveiled its third Safe Haven Baby Box, a climate-controlled box where parents in crisis can safely surrender their unborn child or newborn. The box is located at Station 59 and is designed to provide a safe and anonymous way for parents to give up their child.
A Safe Solution
The Safe Haven Baby Box is a resource that can help save the lives of newborns. According to federal data, dozens of infants die each year after being abandoned. The box is equipped with sensors that detect when a baby has been placed inside, triggering an alarm and sending a text blast to firefighters, who can respond quickly.
For founder Monica Kelsey, the goal is to give parents in crisis a safe solution to surrender their infant. Kelsey, who was abandoned as a newborn herself, says she stands on the front lines of this movement. The box is 100% anonymous, and the baby is safe once inside.
