The Declaration of Independence, written in 1776, is often viewed as a relic of the past. However, its 27 grievances against King George III and the British government are still relevant today. As a professor of history, I have been researching the Declaration of Independence for nearly a quarter-century and have found that the issues that disturbed the Revolution’s leaders in 1776 are ones that Americans are still concerned about today.
Understanding the Grievances
The grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence include a partisan judiciary, arbitrary power, officials not being responsible to their constituents, and people lacking a voice in decisions that affect their families. These issues are just as relevant today as they were 250 years ago. The Declaration of Independence also discusses the king’s effort to make the military independent of and superior to the civil power, which is a concern that is still debated today.
The colonists’ grievances demonstrate the widespread, sustained fury that Britain’s imperial reforms produced in the colonies and present a more comprehensive view of the U.S. at the moment of its birth. The grievances also reveal how the Revolution depended on ordinary Americans, including people of color and Indigenous peoples, who were making their presence felt and voices heard in the years before the Revolutionary War.
The People Behind the Grievances
Behind each charge in the Declaration of Independence was a person enacting the king’s design. The Revolution’s leaders became convinced that the actions of these officials made it impossible for the 13 colonies to remain in the British Empire. They feared that if they did not take this step toward independence, Americans would lose the ability to seek justice, make their voices heard, or enjoy representative government.
The Declaration of Independence is an important document that continues to shape American politics and society today. Its grievances serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting individual liberties and ensuring that government officials are accountable to the people.
