DC Freedom 250 Grand Prix street circuit gets high‑speed preview from GM exec and officials

Less than a day before the first checkered flag will wave at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, city officials and automotive leaders took a high‑speed test run on the 1.7‑mile street circuit that winds through downtown Washington, D.C. The preview gave participants a chance to feel the bumps, tight corners and unique challenges of racing on public streets surrounding the National Mall.

GM executive leads the ride

Ken Morris, General Motors senior vice president of product programs, product safety and motor sports, sat in the passenger seat of a 670‑horsepower Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The car hit about 140 mph as it navigated the course, allowing Morris to assess how the street surface and curb‑side conditions differ from a permanent racetrack.

“Oh, inspiring! D.C. is such a phenomenal place. I’m starstruck by it every time I’m here and to be able to have a track in the middle of it is fantastic,” Morris said after the run. He noted that modern race cars have limited suspension travel, making them especially sensitive to the uneven pavement typical of city streets.

Government officials get a taste

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin also climbed into a two‑seat IndyCar for a quick lap. “Absolutely amazing,” Mullin said. “I had no idea how hard they come out of those corners. That was a blast.” When asked about speed cameras, Mullin laughed that he might receive a ticket in the mail, a nod to the everyday reality of D.C. drivers.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who took a spin on Wednesday, emphasized the economic boost the event could bring. “Let me be clear. I’m not driving any race cars. I am a great driver,” Bowser joked, adding that she was paired with a professional driver for safety. She highlighted that the Grand Prix could generate tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars for local hotels and restaurants, especially in August when Congress is out of session and tourism slows.

Looking ahead

Mayor Bowser expressed a desire for the Freedom 250 to become an annual fixture. “We not only want to have it this year; we want to have it next year, and the year after that, and the year after that,” she said, underscoring the city’s commitment to making the race a lasting part of D.C.’s cultural calendar.

The final combination of Turns 6 and 7, just before the lap finishes near the National Mall and the Capitol, was Morris’s favorite section of the circuit. Drivers will need to balance speed with precision as they navigate the tight downtown corners, a factor that could influence team strategies once the race weekend begins.

Local businesses anticipate a surge in patronage, and the event organizers have pledged to work closely with city agencies to ensure safety, traffic flow and minimal disruption to residents. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix promises to showcase Washington, D.C.’s iconic landmarks while delivering the excitement of high‑performance motor sport to a new audience.
