President Trump to Present Congressional Space Medal of Honor to Artemis II Crew

President Donald Trump announced that he will award the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four astronauts who completed the historic Artemis II mission. The ceremony is set for Aug. 28 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Artemis II achievement

Artemis II marked the first crewed flight of NASA’s Orion spacecraft and the first crewed lunar flyby in more than 50 years. Launched on April 1, the crew traveled 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the distance record set by Apollo 13 in 1970. During the nearly ten‑day mission the astronauts covered 695,081 miles, passed within 4,067 miles of the Moon’s surface on April 6, and returned to Earth on April 10, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off California.

The crew—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen—captured more than 7,000 images, documented meteoroid impact flashes on the Moon’s night side, and tested Orion’s life‑support and navigation systems. Their flight is a key step toward returning humans to the lunar surface with Artemis III, Artemis IV and eventually crewed missions to Mars.

Congressional Space Medal of Honor

The medal, authorized by Congress in 1969, recognizes astronauts who demonstrate “exceptionally meritorious efforts and contributions to the welfare of the nation and mankind.” Since its inception, only 30 individuals have received the award, including Neil Armstrong, John Glenn and Jim Lovell. The Artemis II crew will become the 34th recipients.

President Trump’s decision to present the medal underscores the administration’s emphasis on maintaining American leadership in space. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the crew accepted “significant risk” while testing systems that will support deeper‑space exploration. He added that under President Trump’s leadership, Artemis II “captivated the world, inspired a generation, and gave us the confidence to press on as America returns to the Moon.”

Future Artemis missions

NASA plans to test commercial lunar lander operations in low Earth orbit during Artemis III in 2027, with a crewed lunar landing targeted for Artemis IV in 2028. The agency’s long‑term goal is an enduring human presence on the Moon and a pathway to crewed missions to Mars.

The upcoming medal ceremony will be the first time a sitting president has presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor since the award’s inception, highlighting the significance of the Artemis II flight for U.S. space policy and national pride.
