Dallas to Host GOP Midterm Convention, Boosting Local Economy and Party Unity

Dallas is set to become the focal point of Republican politics this September as the Republican National Committee holds its first midterm convention at the American Airlines Center. President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the crowd on both nights, joined by Vice President JD Vance and a slate of Republican candidates. The event, unlike a presidential nominating convention, is designed to present the party’s agenda and candidates ahead of the November 3 elections.

Why Dallas?

The city’s selection reflects a blend of political relationships and practical advantages. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton confirmed Dallas as the host in mid‑June, and the formal announcement followed on June 30. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters noted that President Trump has long favored Dallas, citing the state’s strong conservative supporters, robust fundraising networks, and a favorable environment for the party’s plans.

American Airlines Center can accommodate roughly 20,000 attendees, outpacing Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena, which holds about 14,000. Dallas also offers a larger media market and an established network of hotels, restaurants, and transportation services—critical assets while the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center undergoes a major rebuild.

Economic Impact for the City

Local officials anticipate a welcome boost to the hospitality sector. Visit Dallas President and CEO Craig Davis estimates the convention could fill more than 5,000 hotel rooms, providing a needed lift for downtown hotels that have lost weekday group business during the convention‑center renovation. Visitors are also expected to dine at local restaurants, use rideshare services, and shop in areas such as Victory Park, Uptown, and downtown, generating additional sales‑tax revenue.

The Dallas 2026 Host Committee, led by Ray and Heather Washburne, has already reported raising $45 million in private donations within a month of the announcement. While the exact figure varies in reports, the fundraising effort underscores the scale of the event and the enthusiasm of national donors.

Public Costs and Oversight

Dallas has projected approximately $1.8 million in policing and security expenses for the two‑day gathering. City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said the city will document all costs and pursue available grants or reimbursements. Organizers have expressed willingness to help offset these expenses, and City Council members are monitoring the budget impact to ensure taxpayers are not unduly burdened.

Local Leadership and Support

The host committee includes prominent Dallas businesspeople and former Trump administration officials, such as businessman Kenny Troutt, his wife Lisa Troutt, and former RNC national finance chairman Ray Washburne. Former RNC Chairman Reince Priebus serves as senior adviser, adding further national experience to the planning team.

Beyond the immediate economic benefits, Davis highlighted a longer‑term advantage: visitors who experience Dallas during a major event may return for business, leisure, or investment, strengthening the city’s reputation as a vibrant, family‑friendly destination.

Community Engagement

The Dallas Express will provide live coverage throughout convention week, including a complimentary screening of “Remember the Alamo: Don’t Sharia My Texas” at the W Dallas Living Room Bar. The event, featuring journalist Lara Logan, filmmaker Chris Burgard, and Dallas Express co‑founder Sarah Zubiate‑Bennett, underscores the city’s commitment to cultural dialogue alongside political activity.

Overall, the midterm convention offers Dallas a unique platform to showcase its capacity to host a major national political event, support local businesses, and reinforce the strong conservative values that define the community.
