Houston Native Regan Hutsell Crowned Miss America 2027, First Texan Since 1975

Houston‑born Regan Hutsell made history on Sunday night when she was crowned Miss America 2027 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her victory ends a more than five‑decade wait for a Texan to claim the national title, the last being Shirley Cothran in 1975.

Local roots and dance pedigree

Hutsell’s ties to the Houston dance community run deep. She trained with the Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theatre and later with Houston Ballet before launching a professional career. At 18, she became a Radio City Rockette and subsequently performed internationally with the Birmingham Royal Ballet, appearing on stages throughout Europe.

Pageant performance and awards

Competing as Miss Texas, Hutsell advanced through multiple rounds after two nights of preliminary events that featured 52 delegates representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. She earned preliminary awards in both fitness and talent, the latter for a jazz dance routine set to “Le Jazz Hot.” In the final night, Hutsell joined the Top 5 alongside contestants from Louisiana, Illinois, California and the District of Columbia, ultimately securing the crown.

First woman of color with natural hair

The Miss America organization noted that Hutsell is the first woman of color to win the crown while wearing her natural hair, marking a milestone for representation and inclusivity in the pageant’s 105‑year history.

Scholarships and future plans

Through the Miss America Opportunity, Hutsell has earned nearly $90,000 in scholarships toward her education. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in health sciences with the goal of becoming a physical therapist. The Miss America organization awards more than $5 million in tuition scholarships each year, along with additional in‑kind awards.

Community service focus

Hutsell’s personal struggle with an eating disorder and the pressures of perfectionism inspired her to create the “Your Body Is Your Home” initiative. The program encourages healthy self‑worth and positive inner dialogue, emphasizing that a person’s value should not be measured by appearance. As Miss America, she will spend the coming year promoting this message and supporting the organization’s mission to empower women through scholarships, service and opportunity.

Family and hometown celebration

Speaking to KHOU 11, Hutsell expressed pride in representing the city that shaped her: “Born and raised, proud Houstonian, proud of the community in Houston that has truly shaped who I am. Getting to carry that to the national level is something I’m super excited for.” She highlighted the unwavering support of her parents and noted that her family plans to celebrate her return at one of her favorite Mexican restaurants in Houston.

Regan Hutsell’s achievement brings a wave of pride to Texas and serves as an inspiring example of perseverance, talent and community service for young people across the state.
