Dallas officials and longtime residents gathered Friday night to celebrate the dedication of the newly renovated football field at the Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center in Oak Cliff. The field now bears the name of the late Earl “Coach” Thompson, the founder and longtime mentor of the Redbird Raiders youth football program.
Coach Thompson’s lasting impact
Coach Thompson spent decades guiding hundreds of young players, emphasizing that every child and every family deserved a chance to participate. As his son Chris Thompson recalled, “He wanted to give every kid a chance, every family a chance. He didn’t want anyone to be left out. This was his community. He did not want to leave his community.”
Beyond his work with the Redbird Raiders, Thompson earned induction into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame and the Prairie View Interscholastic League Association Hall of Fame, recognizing his broader contributions to Texas athletics.
Renovation details
The $2.4 million renovation, described by Sean Johnson, Deputy Director of Dallas Parks and Recreation, as a true partnership among community members, city leaders, and state partners, added LED lighting, new bleachers, an announcer’s booth, and two modern scoreboards. The upgraded facility provides a safe, well‑lit venue for youth sports and community events.
“His life is a true testament to what it means to give back to the community,” Johnson said. “It takes a village to make these types of things happen.”
Community response
Longtime Oak Cliff residents recalled a time when the neighborhood lacked a proper field or lighting for practice. The new field, now bearing Coach Thompson’s name, symbolizes both a tribute to his legacy and a tangible improvement for future generations.
“A great man. We are so proud of him. We are so proud of the legacy he left for us, our kids, and just us as a community,” Chris Thompson added, echoing the sentiment of many who gathered for the dedication.
Looking ahead
The renamed field will serve as a gathering place for youth football, community celebrations, and family outings, reinforcing the values of teamwork, perseverance, and faith that Coach Thompson championed. City officials hope the facility will inspire other neighborhoods to invest in safe, high‑quality recreational spaces.
As Dallas continues to invest in its parks and recreation infrastructure, the dedication of the Earl Thompson Field stands as a reminder that strong families, faith‑centered service, and individual liberty thrive when communities come together to honor those who have given so much.
